Secure@Phone was conceived by a community of concerned parents and therefore one of our highest priorities is protecting our schools and our children from this growing crime. After all, a quarter of all Hong Kong phone owners are under thirteen years of age with some as young as six. Kids with phones make easy targets and sadly kids themselves are turning to mobile theft. It is becoming more and more prevalent in our schools.
We mark our children's shoes, coats and bags, so why not their mobile phones? This would cut down on the increasing trend of devices being stolen to feed a drug habit or gang related crime. Most schools don't allow devices to be brought onto the premises for this reason but in reality it extremely hard to enforce especially as parents often want their children to carry phones, to keep track of them and for peace of mind.
As phones become more popular and the functionality increases so to does the cost. Let's face it our kids these days want the latest and greatest with a camera, MP3 player and all the other gadgets. The average phone now costs about HK$1620.00 (that's without all the gadgets!). In a secondary school of approximately 1000 students roughly 40% own a device, that's a staggering $648,000 worth of devices available to a thief at any one time.
